Smokey Bear House - Fayetteville, AR - completed 2019

The Challenge: The clients needed a home that balanced active family life with peaceful retreat. They specifically requested a distinct spatial separation between the kids' wing (bedrooms and playroom) and the master suite and primary social areas. Furthermore, the home needed to capture two distinct site lines: city views to the north and sunset vistas over the hills to the west.

The Solution: We designed a light-filled ‘breezeway’ corridor that serves a dual purpose. It acts as a welcoming, central main entrance for visitors, while simultaneously providing a physical and acoustic buffer between the two distinct zones of the house. The footprint was carefully oriented to perfectly frame the prioritized northern and western views.

The Outcome: The resulting home pairs a rugged, low-maintenance standing seam metal exterior with the natural warmth of deeply carved wooden porches. This combination of an industrial aesthetic and tactile natural materials creates a durable, highly functional home uniquely tailored to the family's daily rhythm.

Phase 2 Expansion

As the project enters its second phase, the goal is to expand the footprint without compromising the home’s original aesthetic or critical site lines. This master plan coordinates the existing residence with a new three-car garage, pool house, and ADU. The carefully mapped layout seamlessly connects the old and new structures, optimizing circulation while centering the outdoor experience around a new private courtyard.

Contextual Integration

This perspective illustrates how the new structures step naturally with the topography. By sketching the additions in context, we ensure the expanded garage and pool house complement the main residence's industrial-meets-rustic aesthetic. The new massing anchors firmly to the sloping site while protecting the property's vital northern and western sightlines

Outdoor Integration

Integrating the new pool and pool house requires careful spatial planning to maintain the site's natural balance. By utilizing open breezeways and strategic placement, the addition acts as a natural architectural extension. This arrangement shelters the private pool area, creating an intimate outdoor living space that bridges the gap between the primary residence and the new amenities.

Framed Arrival

While the site is defined by its sweeping outward vistas, the approach to the new addition required its own distinct focal point. This sketch details the view from the driveway, where a purpose-built dog trot between the garage and pool house frames the outdoor fireplace. Enhancing this transition, a strategic skylight pierces the breezeway to naturally illuminate an integrated pool rinse shower, creating a highly functional and inviting threshold into the private courtyard.
